Job evaluation and pay structure

Job evaluation is the process of establishing a structure for jobs in an organisation. The concern for job evaluation is not for people, but the job itself. A pay structure is the procedure of administering its pay philosophy.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Job evaluation and pay structure specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More There are different types of pay structures, for example, internal equity method and market pricing. The purpose of a pay structure is to take the role of each person and reason why people receive different compensation. It also deals with opportunities of incentives. The following are objectives of job evaluation: determining how much people who perform the job, should be paid, means of comparing jobs, and pay rates with those of other organisations. Effectiveness of the Armed Forces pays structure policies Wage policies vary in different organisations. Army pays should be at least equal to si milar civilian jobs, but there should be an extra pay on top of that. The Army receives policies under different conditions. For example, when the army goes for a fight or defends a country, they may work in extremely harsh conditions with serious injures involved. Therefore, they receive compensation in relation to harsh conditions. This is a policy that favours the army since they receive extra payments. Offering this policy is as a result of choosing the best pay structure. The armed forces get favours to the national guards. They receive bonuses and incentives. Personnel maintain electronic equipment as a requirement in the military. Those who repair them normally specialize in certain equipment. Also, these individuals use weapons that have electronic components that help, for instance, in firing the weapon. They receive training so that they can handle these electrical weapons (Henderson, 2003). This is a form of policy. Armed forces training and working conditions are terribl y dangerous. Even when there is peace, time and working conditions can be devilishly hard on the individuals. This is because personnel must strictly follow the military rules at all times. The soldiers do not even have time for their families. This leads to split of the families sometimes. They are compensated for their devotion to work.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! This is a policy that significantly favours the militants. Systems used in paying salaries and wages to the Armed Forces Some work conditions depend on the branch of service and other factors. Military individuals live or work near military facilities. For one to make complete military personnel, he or she must be physically fit, not insane, and ready to participate. The system used in paying wages and salaries is job evaluation method. It is evident that compensation of individuals is according to their working conditions. Also, offering of salaries is according to the services. Slotting is a method that compares an organization with another, that is already existing (Husband, 1976). The only disadvantage is that it cannot be used as the only system for job evaluation. Comparison with the defence department for civilians The defence department seeks the ability to recruit some civilians into the military. It also forms a civilian expeditionally workforce that will train and equip the civilians to deploy overseas in support of the military missions all over the world. This program also lets in former and retired civilian’s employees who are willing to return to federal service. References Henderson, R. I. How to Write a Business Report

How to Write a Business Report Writing Your Business Report What is a business report should be the most important question one needs to ask, because if you do not know this answer you would have already failed. Business reports are concise documents that will inform the reader about certain facts by summarizing and analyzing the details or various situations a business might find itself in. Before you begin writing a business report it is important to find out who your audience is and what the fundamental purpose of the report is, this way you will ensure that you will meet the requirements expected. Mediterranean fruit fly (ceratitis capitat) in NewZealand Essay

Mediterranean fruit fly (ceratitis capitat) in NewZealand - Essay Example It is also referred to as the med fly for short. It belongs to the Animalia Kingdom. Its phylum is anthropoda. The class is an insect. The order is diptera. The family is tephritidae and the genus ceratitis ("Ceratitis capitata," 2011). As a species of fruit fly, the insect is able to cause significant damage to a wide array of fruit agricultural crops. This insect is native to the Mediterranean region; however, it has spread to many other parts of the globe. These areas include Australia, as well as a variety of regions throughout North and South America. This fruit fly’s invasive nature has made it a particular problem in many of these regions. In terms of reproductive elements the fruit fly lays its eggs under the skins of fruit. This occurs most frequently in fruit where the skin is already broken. After three days, the larvae develop inside the fruit. While the insect has been viewed largely as an invasive species, it additionally has an ecological purpose as it can serve to control specific plant growth. There are significant implications for the Mediterranean fruit fly’s invasion into New Zealand. In understanding these implications there is the understanding that this insect has caused significant problems in other areas. Attacks between 1975 and 1993 in California cost the state over $170 million in prevention measures. Australia and Hawaii experienced similar incursions of the fruit fly. In Australia, over 200 fruit crops became infested before preventions measures were put into place. For New Zealand, it’s noted that there would be a significant impact on the horticulture industry ("Mediterranean fruit fly," 2011). This is highly significant because of the impact it would have on the New Zealand economy, including potential job losses. Indeed, it’s noted that among the products that there are more than $58 million worth of crops that are in the highly susceptible range

Examine the application of the maxims of equity in the context of Essay

Examine the application of the maxims of equity in the context of trusts - Essay Example Under trust, the trustee is a person appointed by law to hold the property on behalf of the beneficiary (Clements and Abass, 2009). In so doing, the trustee is under obligation or submitting to a form of legal obligation mainly referred to as the English law. Moreover, a trustee may be bound by onerous responsibilities, mainly those imposed by the statute, by general principles of equity, or by the trust instrument (Oakley, Parker and Mellows, 2008). What is important is that there are severe costs awaiting trustees, particularly those who neglect their duties or violate the terms and conditions of the trust. Essentially, thus, there must be certainty and clarity when setting up a trust. It is important to be clear that the trustee is bound by the trust and as such, may not make use of the property in his personal capacity (Moffat, Bean and Probert 2009). Likewise, the beneficiary’s rights must be established with clarity and certainty so that they are in a position to enforce the trust in the case the trustee has failed to observe the terms set out. The above-quoted dictum or maxim of His Lordship will form the context for examining how principles of equity are applied in the context of trusts. In maxims of equity and trust, there is no wrong without a remedy. As Moffat (2009) holds, it is the responsibility of the court of law to offer a consideration or remedy for a plaintiff even in the case where none has been provided in the statute book. This is because, as stipulated in the ubi jus ibi remedium, a remedy exists where there is a right (McFarlane, Hopkins and Nield, 2012). Suffice to say, this underlies the entire concept of equity because, until now, the common law courts completely refuse to provide sufficient remedies in certain circumstances. For instance, when it comes to the institution of trust, common law does not wholesomely recognize the beneficiary’s rights, but such rights are

It is an article for my experimental economy class to summary Essay - 1

It is an article for my experimental economy class to summary - Essay Example Economists and none-economists students were selected for the study. The study was done in form of an experiment that required decision making within a period of about 30 minutes. It required the division of $10 in multiples of $0.50 between two people; a proposer and a responder. The proposer was to propose the division and the responder to decide if the division was acceptable or not. From the study conducted by Carter John and Irons Michael it is noted that economists generally accept less from others and keep more to themselves as compared to the none-economists. When another variable that helps to identify freshman economists and freshman non- economists was added, the freshman economists were still found to hold to the perspective of accepting less from others and keeping more. Therefore economists are born and not man-made. A third variable was also added to differentiate between the senior economists and the senior none-economists. This was meant to bring out any effects on the behavior of the economists as a result of learning economics. There were no clear learning effects realized from the experiment. Therefore, learning does not change the behavior of economists. The freshman economist and the senior economist all held the same perspective: They accept less and keep more to themselves (Carter and Irons 173). It was also realized that the choice of economics major students to major in economics was strongly related to their behavior. It was also found out that the economists were not only skilled in self interest calculation as facilitated by their deductive reasoning needed to recognize and decide on opportunities for economic gain. Economists are better at the type of thought processes that are related to rationality. They were able to give good figure of what a responder should accept and what a proposer should propose so as to maximize their monetary wealth keeping in mind that their partners

The Restoration Period Of Jonathan Swift English Literature Essay

The Restoration Period Of Jonathan Swift English Literature Essay Jonathan Swift was born in the Restoration Period and reflects it in his verbal violence, hyperbole, and explicit sexual and excretory terms (Rogers, 1987, p. 231). Rogers explanation to Swifts writing is revealing. A number of people seem to not know who Jonathan Swift was; what he wrote; what he did; anything. They had been missing out on one of the best satirists of his day, possibly all time. From his satires of England ruling Ireland to his satires of Mans weakness, he created some of the greatest stories anyone has ever read or heard. Jonathan Swift lived from 1667-1745. Swift was born in Dublin and lived in Ireland for most of his life, but his parents, Abigail Erick and Jonathan Swift, were English. His father was an attorney at Kings Inn. His father died seven months before he was born, which led many to speculate that it had an influence on his writing (Group, 1998, p. 190). He was very sick as a child and developed Menieres disease, which affects the inner ear. He lived with his nurse in England for a few years when he was young due to his mothers meager earnings (Merriman, 2008). After his stay in England, Swift went back to Ireland and lived with his uncle who sent him to Kilkenny Grammar School from 1674 to 1682 where he met William Congreve. He then received a M.A. degree from Oxford University in 1692. He attended Trinity College in Dublin the following years. Trinity College almost denied him his degree due to misconduct (Kilvert, 1997, p. 1196). He was ordained as a priest in 1694. He was employed as a secretary to Sir William Temple (Rogers, 1987, p. 231). In 1695, he became Prebend of Kilroot. He first published under the pseudonym Lemuel. By 1700, he became Chaplain to Lord Berkley. He was awarded his Doctor of Divinity degree in 1701 (Kilvert, 1997, p. 1196-1197). At age thirty-seven, Swift published  A Tale of a Tub  and  Battle of the Books. As he grew older, he became more involved with political issues and his satires became more savage (Merriman, 2008). Part of this was the many scandals and behind-closed doors activities of the aristocracy (Rogers, 1987, p. 231). He published  Gullivers Travels  at age sixty, which has been adapted to both stage and film, and spawned multiple sequels. In 1728, a woman he had been a mentor to, and some believe a lover, died, resulting in a decline in Swifts health.  Swift donated a third of his income to charity and when he died, left all his money to build a hospital. He was quite philanthropic for the time he lived in (Wikisource, 2010). Section 3 In  1667, the Dutch fleet defeated the English in Medway River. The treaties of Breda among Netherlands, England, France, and Denmark were made. The following year, a  triple alliance of England, Netherlands, and Sweden formed against France and Newton built his first reflecting telescope (Group, 1998, p. 191). During the new decade, the  Secret Treaty of Dover between Charles II of England and Louis XIV of France to restore Roman Catholicism to England was made. From 1672-1674, the  third Anglo-Dutch war continued. William III became ruler of Netherlands the same year. By  1673, Test Act aimed to deprive English Roman Catholics and nonconformists of public office. 1675 saw the construction on St. Pauls Cathedral begin (Rogers, 1987, p. 231). In  1677, William III, ruler of the Netherlands, married Mary, daughter of James, Duke of York, and heir to the English throne. Two years later, Act of Habeas Corpus passed, forbidding imprisonment without trial and Parliaments Bill of Exclusion against the Roman Catholic Duke of York was blocked by Charles II (Merriman, 2008). The Whigs reintroduced the Exclusion Bill and James II was King of England and VII of Scotland. Johann Bach was born the same year. James II disregarded the Test Act and appointed Roman Catholics to public office. Then he issued the Declaration of Liberty of Conscience, which extended toleration to all religions (Group, 1998, p. 191). England had its Glorious Revolution and Parliament issued Bill of Rights and established a constitutional monarchy in Britain. William III and Mary II became joint monarchs of England and Scotland until 1694. The Toleration Act granted freedom of worship to dissenters in England (Rogers, 1987, p. 231). Over in America, the Salem Witch Trials began in Massachusetts. 1707 brought about the union of Scotland and England to form Great Britain (Merriman, 2008). Section 4 Gullivers Travels,  A Tale of a Tub,  A Modest Proposal,  Battle of the Books,  Bickerstaff-Partridge Papers,  The Drapier Letters, The Journal to Stella, Writings on Religion and Church Vol. 1, Three Sermons and Prayers,  and  English Tongue  are all written by Swift. Perhaps Swift wrote the satires he did because of growing up in such an arduous time and place in Ireland. Being a poor child, with no father, and being under English rule would certainly influence most writers. A Modest Proposal  is a satire of the English rule of Ireland in which Swift forms a calculated decision to have certain people be designated breeders whose children would be eaten for the good of the people. Clearness, cogency, masculine simplicity of diction, are conspicuous in the pamphlet, but true creative power told the  Tale of a Tub. Good God! What a genius I had when I wrote that book! was his own exclamation in his latter years. It is, indeed, if not the most amusing of Swifts satirical works, the most strikingly original, and the one in which the compass of his powers is most fully displayed (Britannica, 1911). Gullivers Travels  is a story about a man who becomes a doctor, travels around the world on ships, and learns new information about different kinds of culture. However, the main focus of the story is when the ship, on which he resides, crashes into a rock and he swims to shore, passing out a mile onto the island. When he awakens, he discovers he has been bonded to the ground with rope and that the inhabitants of the island are only six inches tall! Their king then sends for him to be brought to the kingdom and this is where his satirical abilities begin to show. Section 5   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Jonathan Swift, despite his childish sense of humor, manages to poke fun at the aristocracy and show the commoners through allusions and hidden references what their superiors are really like.  Gullivers Travels  is one of the best books and finest satires by any author. The use of fake events in the story, which just so happen to relate to a real life event that happened between the Whigs and Tories in England, was genius.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Swift had a troubled childhood to say the least, not as strange as Edgar Allan Poes, but certainly not normal. He had an interesting life crammed with religion, but not love. His, as some believe, love died a few years before he did. He wrote more works than a lot of authors and published quite a few under pseudonyms. Jonathan Swift, in many minds, holds the title of Greatest Satirist of All Time.

Marhsal Field :: essays research papers fc

Marshal Field The elder Marshall Field considered himself the â€Å"Chief Apostle of the American Way,† he epitomized the American Dream by becoming one of America’s first rags to riches stories in the industrial boom of both the pre-Antebellum and post-Antebellum periods. Marshall Field was born and raised as a humble farm boy and became perhaps the greatest businessman this country has ever had. Field learned his work ethic as a young boy by direct example of his father, who started working two hours before daybreak and stopped two hours after. As soon as Marshall could walk, he was working on the family farm. At the age of six, he enrolled in district school only during the winter months when farm work was scarce. He continued these lines of life until the age of fifteen, when the Field family was forced to stop working their farm due to a road closure. At this time it was decided that since Marshall was the youngest son and did not qualify for of the estate property, that he would have to go out and earn his own living. His father being friends with the local dry goods (general store) owner secured Marshall a clerking job in the dry goods store. Ironically, Marshall was fired from that same job after two weeks. When the father inquired what had happened the owner told him that your son has no future in the dry goods market and he should be kept at home on the farm where he belongs. Marshall Field then began working as a hired hand on his brother’s farm. After two years of being his brother’s servant, he moved to Pittsfield, Massachusetts with his other brother. His brother had secured Marshall a job at the Deacon-H.G. Davis dry goods store. There his first year salary was a measly $400. However, he was able to save two hundred of this by sleeping in the store. By the time of the 1857 panic, Marshall had modernized Deacon’s credit policies; subsequently Deacon was not monetarily damaged by the panic. By modernizing Deacon’s credit programs Field was able to insure the store’s future by making credit harder to attain, by shortening the amount of time customers had to repay the store. Because of some unwise business dealings the store’s owners had been involved in, the store was reorganized into Cooley, Farwell and Company. Marshall Field was then awarded a partnership for his part in saving the store from the Panic.

Communication between countries

Communication between countries has become one of the most important things for country leaders to consider. However, some people think that regular communication can lead to a mixture of culture that may cause culture collapse. Actually, communication between countries cannot be avoided in modern society. Also, culture will always disappear when time passes as young people are less concern about culture. Besides, communication can create new culture that can lead the world to a more platonic place that all people can live together without much culture differences Firstly, we need communication and diversity between countries.Different countries have different culture. Without communication, the country is over closed that may cause huge disaster. Just like China during King Dynasty: when the empire decided to close the gate of trade, she actually closed a most convenient way to develop and gain power. Finally, the whole country was almost defeated by the foreign enemies. From the le sson taught by Chinese people's blood, we cannot stop communicating between countries. Secondly, culture collapse is not mainly caused by communication. When ages pass, all old things will eventually disappear s these are not what young people interested in.Therefore, when more old people have gone, less people are familiar with it; even it Is their own culture, until finally when they realize it. At that time, those people actually need other similar culture to complete their lost part. From time to time, the thing that some called culture collapse occurs, but it is Just a way for people to maintain their culture. Last but not least, it is true that many cultures have huge differences that a little action may cause huge misunderstanding. For example, the same gesture made In China means K means money in Japan and also means affront In Brazil. As a result, because traveling has become one of the most Important entertainments, so we need to accept different culture from communicating between countries. Although there are many religions In the world, their mall purpose Is the same which Is to give people belief, to prevent them giving up when meeting difficulties as they believe gods are helping them, and to lead them In the right way with appreciation. In that case, even countries have a variety of culture; the mixture of culture can actually Improve the ultra and make It better. In conclusion, communication between countries cannot be stopped as not only countries need It, culture needs It, too. It may cause culture change Its original, but It Is no doubted that the communication Is helping the culture and lower the speed of culture collapse. Communication between countries By Rose-Wang have gone, less people are familiar with it; even it is their own culture, until finally huge misunderstanding. For example, the same gesture made in China means K means money in Japan and also means affront in Brazil. As a result, because revealing has become one of the most impo rtant entertainments, so we need to many religions in the world, their main purpose is the same which is to give people helping them, and to lead them in the right way with appreciation. Ethics believes in the military Essays

Ethics believes in the military Essays Ethics believes in the military Essay Ethics believes in the military Essay Introduction The assumption that leadership is a family legacy or a genetic gift is a fallacy and many projects and organizations based on this assumption have failed miserably. Becoming a leader is a prompted process of growth that must be lived out experientially. To be a good leader, one must be able to say yes and sometimes no to a non-ending series of tests, small and large, each demanding that one take a few more steps towards a definition of the set of values and beliefs that defines that person. Leadership calls for one to be ready to define the values, character, and ones leadership style. Indeed, leadership is a unending responsibility, which becomes a way of life, not only in the line of duty, but within families, the community, and the world at large. From the outset, it is important to note that ethics is the heart and soul of effective leadership. Indeed, leadership and ethics should go hand in hand as the power that comes from leadership can be used for good as well as evil. When o ne assumes the benefits of leadership, he should also assume ethical burdens. Therefore, it is important that leaders develop an understanding of ethics by analyzing their values, morals, ethics and their systems of ethical decision making. Personal Moral Philosophy In my life, morality and ethics have been developing since my formative years. My parents, teachers, and the other responsible members of the community influenced many of my decisions, either in school, or with family and friends. My teachers and parents advised what was considered immoral or unethical. Notably, through their support, I went through a process of trial and error where I was condemned for what was wrong and praisedfor what was right. As I grew older and developed a better understanding of my environment, I was able to develop innate moral values that have acted as my point of reference when I am faced with an important decision with a moral dilemma. By consolidating my values and beliefs, I have, with time, developed a philosophy that is composed of the following core elements; fairness, respect, duty, loyalty, selfless, integrity, and courage. I believe in equity and that every person should be treated with fairness irrespective of his or her faith, race, culture, or political allegiance. In all my undertakings, I am consciously aware of how fair acts of omission or commission are to other people. If people feelthat my actions are unfairly balanced against them, they will want more or give less. Integrity is the other important component of my personal moral philosophy. I believe that it is important to always do the right thing, even when no one is watching and especially when the choice of doing the contrary is easier. By staying true to myself and my values even when faced with serious consequences for the choices that I make is the best thing that I can do. By living with integrity, my actions speak for who I am and what I believe in. by operating from integrity, I have been able to gain trust of other people, especially those close to me1. Others see me as a dependable person who is accountable for his actions. As a r esult, I have been able to become a role model to people as communities, families and friends want someone they can trust and respect. The other core important element of my personal moral philosophy is courage. Growing up, I saw many people falter or make unethical decision because of lack of courage. I believe that courage is an important virtue in guarding ones beliefs and values2. 1.McCoy, B H.Living into leadership.Stanford, CA: Stanford University Press, 2007. 2.Kouzes, J M, and B Posner. The Leadership Challenge.John Wiley and Sons: New York, 2007. My belief is that courage gives one the ability to accept people as they are, not as one would like them to be. It has also given me the capacity to approach problems in terms of the present rather than the past. Additionally, I am able to trust others, even if the risk seems great, and perform my duties without constant approval and recognition from others. Duty, Outcome and Virtue Whenever a decision with an ethical angle is made, there is always an agent acting on certain principle geared towards certain outcomes. Whatever the dilemma or situation, duty, virtue and consequences will remain the same; an agent, actions taken, and outcomes of the result. The three elements define an Ethical Triangle where all ethical decisions must be framed3. Since nothing else is involved in decision making processes other than actions taken, people acting, and outcomes that result from those actions, the triangle represents a complete framework of ethical systems. All the three elements are included in my philosophy as they form the foundation on which I have developed the other elements. Philosophy Strengths Just like many other personal moral philosophies, there are certain strengths that exist in my philosophy. One of the strengths is that it is easily accessible as people share the same rationality; it easily appeals to the sense that people share the same morality. The philosophy is more than just peoples inclinations and preferences. Even though different individuals and cultures may reach different conclusions on what is right or wrong, there is a prevailing sense that the elements of my philosophy are intrinsic value. 1.Kidder, R M.Moral courage.New York: HarperCollins Publishers, Inc. , 2005. The other strength is that the philosophy concentrates on universal human character and allows for some measure of flexibility as it has the potential for goodness rather than on what is right or wrong. Philosophy Weaknesses Weaknesses too do exist in this philosophy. For example, the espoused values depend on the acceptance that good is what is found in nature. However, evil too does exist and strict adherence to this philosophy can generate more evil than good. The other weakness is that the philosophy goes against the portfolio thinking of the contemporary world that recognizes he variety of functions that different people can fulfill. Military Ethics The framework upon which my personal moral philosophy rests borders on the moral and legal foundation on which professional military ethics are founded. The moral foundation of the military is an extension of traditions that some wars are justified. The core values of the military service are a reflection of the honor, personal courage, and integrity in commitment to the ideals of the government. As espoused in my personal moral philosophy, the army presents values such selfless service, courage, and duty. Conclusion Effective leadership cannot exist without ethics. In the military, ethics are important as many decisions have serious ramifications. By consistently abiding to a set moral philosophy, it becomes easier to avoid certain pitfalls that are caused by making unethical decisions. To positively influence leadership, ethical behavior must be practiced and modeled by leaders and those they lead respectively. Indeed, ethics and leadership go hand in hand and every leader has a responsibility to adopt moral philosophy and make ethics a way of life.

Aparthied in South Afirca essays

Aparthied in South Afirca essays Imagine having to carry an identity card wherever you went, or having separate places where you could eat and live. These are the things that the Black South Africans ad to go through in South Africa. The Black South Africans were segregated for their race and no other reason at all. Also the Black South Africans were subject to arrest at a given time without an explanation. Basically, apartheid was an act which highly segregated the Black South Africans from the rest of South Africa. Apartheid is an event in history that will never be forgotten. With this even there come two different types of views. There are those people who support apartheid, and think it is a good thing, and there are also people like myself who think that apartheid was a disgrace and a horrible thing. A website entitled: stormfront.org/archive/t-84837 or the Stormfront White Nationalist Community, is a website/forum which on that particular topic, people are discussing their views on the whole Apartheid crisis. All of the people there think that either 'there should have been a homeland for blacks? orAt the time the kaffer was causing unrest and by providing them with cheap, decent or might I add still standing houses in their own areas was something Verwoerd implemented.? Such terms likekaffer? andboer? are the names given to the Black South Africans. These quotes emphasize that not only do these people think that Apartheid was an ok thing to do, but they think that it should have been don e better! I totally disagree with these points of views or anything supporting racial segregation because I don't feel that anybody should be treated differently than anybody else, not to mention I have a mixed family of blacks, whites, and Chinese. Therefore, I feel completely opposite then the people posting their comments on Stormfront. This site obviously displays the views of supporters for apartheid, but there are also websites ...

The influence of Fast food on life-span in Japan Research Paper

The influence of Fast food on life-span in Japan - Research Paper Example The above issues are analyzed in current paper; effort has been made in order to present the various aspects of the relationship between the long life span of Japanese and their eating behavior especially regarding their trend to avoid fast food. At the next level, the potential use of the specific eating behavior on the life-span of other populations worldwide is evaluated, aiming to answer the following question: would the avoidance of fast food – as an eating behavior adopted by Japanese – could help people worldwide to increase their life span – as this trend has contributed in the long life-span of Japanese? In order to understand the potential relationship between the avoidance of fast food and the long life span as observed in Japan, it would be necessary to present the common effects of fast food of health – as highlighted in the literature focusing on the specific subject. Then the trends of Japanese regarding fast food will be identified and evaluated showing the potential relationship of the specific eating behavior and the long life span. In this way, it will be possible to understand the potential value of the avoidance of fast food for health, a practice that could be suggested to people with different social and cultural characteristics who are likely to eat fast food, especially as a result of their style of life. The term ‘fast food’ is used in order to indicate food of the following characteristics: ‘a) either the food which can be prepared and served quickly or b) the food designed for ready availability, use or consumption’ (Merriam Webster, 2011). Fast food has a series of advantages, which is the reason for the expansion of this type of food in countries worldwide; at a first level, the access to the particular type of food is easy – referring to the fact that the number of restaurants providing the specific type of food is extremely high. Moreover, the cost of fast food is low, a significant advantage of this type of food; in fact, the low cost of fast food – compared to other types of food – is one of its key reasons for its popularity among people of low income – who cannot afford other types of food. Another advantage of fast food is the limited time required for its preparation; as the term itself declares, fast food can be prep ared quite quickly helping consumers to save time for their various activities. Despite its advantages, fast food has been proved to have a series of negative effects. In fact, the research over the health problems related to fast food has proved that the specific type of food can have severe health implications, leading to various health problems either in the short or the long term (Health Food Guide 2011). The most usual negative effect of fast food is the obesity; other damages that the fast food causes on health are the following ones: ‘heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension and even cancer’ (Health Food Guide 2011). Most commonly, the effects of fast food on health cannot be identified early; usually, it is after a severe problem of health, as a result of consuming fast food for a long period of time, that the dangers of the specific types of food are considered and evaluated. The specific issue can be identified in the article of Martindale (2011 ) where reference is made to the case of a ‘victim’ of fast food, a 56-year old woman who has suffered severe problems of health because of her eating practices – referring specifically to fast food. The particular woman has sued the most known fast food chains in her city – Wendy’s, McDonalds, Burger King and KFC – considering that the food served in these restaurants has been the cause for her health problems
